Unlocking Our Potential: The Case for Multiple Education Systems

 


Is it necessary to have a one-size-fits-all education system?

Different types of learning are either more or less effective for different people. An appraisal may reveal that some people benefit more from certain types of learning than others.

There are alternative education systems currently available, such as Montessori and Kumon, but most schools strive to find the best method to teach all students. This desire for a one-size-fits-all solution results in a mediocre educational system. It would be preferable to have multiple systems tailored to different student groups.

Many people do not fully appreciate the different types of learning, even though during our schooling, we may recognize that certain books or teachers are more effective than others. We also observe that some classmates may excel in one subject but struggle in another.

Therefore, it's important for each jurisdiction to have multiple school systems, and for parents and students to have a choice in the type of system that best suits their learning style.

1. Chattering learning, also known as verbal overload, is a type of learning that involves a lot of talking and repetition of the same information in different ways. This method can be beneficial for some individuals as it helps them retain information better. However, for others, the constant talking and repetition can be overwhelming and lead to confusion. It is important to note that different people have different learning styles and what works for one person may not work for another.

2. Byte-sized learning is a teaching method that involves breaking down information into small, manageable chunks and delivering it in a clear and concise manner. This type of learning is highly effective for learners who prefer to process information in small amounts, and can be particularly beneficial for learners with a short attention span. This method is ideal for disciplines such as computer programming, where complex concepts need to be broken down into simple steps, or for technical training where it is important for learners to understand the specific details of a process. Additionally, it can also be helpful in fields such as language learning, where small chunks of information can be easily remembered and built upon. Furthermore, it can be useful in professional development, where employees can quickly acquire new skills and knowledge in a manageable way.

3. Modeling, also known as demonstration learning or learning by example, is a teaching method that involves observing and mimicking the behavior of others. For example, a visual/kinesthetic learner who wants to learn how to play the guitar would benefit from watching a guitar teacher demonstrate different chords and techniques, then mimicking them themselves. This method can also be beneficial for learners who need to see how to do something before they can understand it, such as in fields like cooking, art, or sports. Additionally, this method is widely used in many fields such as education, engineering, and software development where learners can observe and mimic the work of experts, and thus improve their own skills.

The game format can make learning more engaging and interactive, and can be especially effective for learners who enjoy competition or have a hard time sitting still. These ideas and concepts are then organized and connected through lines, arrows or other visual cues, to show the relationships between them. This can help learners to see the big picture and understand the connections between different pieces of information.

Some of the benefits of digital tools are that they can be easily shared and edited, and it can save the mind-map for future reference. 12. Multi-modal learning. It involves using a combination of different types of learning to acquire knowledge and skills. This type of learning is particularly effective for learners who have different learning styles or preferences and can be beneficial for learners who need to approach the material from different angles to fully understand it.

Navigating My Unique Learning Style: Byte-sized Mind-mapping and Project-based Learning

Personally, my primary learning model is a form of byte-sized mind-mapping supported by continuous examples. Initially, I prefer short and specific statements that convey as much information as possible with the least amount of ambiguity. Once I understand the main idea, I can expand my understanding to the broader concept and then delve into the details. I am primarily self-directed, but I often need correction and explanation, especially when dealing with confusing wording, which would require a more conversational approach.

Some books cater to this learning style by including summaries at the beginning of each chapter and boxed points scattered throughout, but they do not work as well for me. My second favorite type of learning is project mapping, but it depends on the theory learned previously.

My least favorite type of learning is chattering. Long essays, such as Microsoft Dynamics 365 online courses, confuse me. Talkative teachers and people who want to "call and discuss this over the phone" are also disorienting for me. If the same point is repeated twice, it does not indicate emphasis for me but rather that there is something different between the two statements and my mind begins to search in vain for the difference.

Summary

Everyone, in my opinion, is a multi-modal learner, but our individual personalities may lead to different learning method preferences. These learning style categories are merely generalizations, and we all have a little of each in our psychological make-up. Nobody should feel ashamed or inadequate if they only understand a topic in one way. For example, just because a student prefers to learn by reading a textbook rather than engaging in a lot of dialogue with the teacher does not imply that they are not a good learner. An adult should not consider it "childish" to need pictures to understand a topic. It simply means that they have a different learning style. The most important thing is that they ultimately understand the topic.

Having several different school systems, each catering to a particular learning style might be better than a one-size-fits-all school system for several reasons:

1.      Tailored instruction: Different learning styles require different teaching methods. A one-size-fits-all approach may not be effective for all students, as some students may not respond well to the teaching methods used. By having different school systems catering to different learning styles, students are more likely to receive instruction that is tailored to their individual needs.

2.      Increased engagement: When students are taught in a way that aligns with their learning style, they are more likely to be engaged in the material. This can lead to increased motivation and participation in class, as well as better learning outcomes.

3.      Improved student outcomes: By providing instruction that is tailored to individual learning styles, students are more likely to achieve their full potential. This can lead to improved grades, increased test scores, and better overall performance in school.

4.      Better student satisfaction: When students are taught in a way that aligns with their learning style, they are more likely to be satisfied with their educational experience. This can lead to increased student satisfaction and a more positive overall school experience.
